Ecology.

Pleske’s ground jay is closely associated with open arid and semi-arid vegetation. Its behaviour makes sense at ground level: running, foraging and using sparse shrub structure rather than relying on continuous tree cover.

Habitat

Arid and semi-arid scrub.

Behaviour

Strongly terrestrial foraging and movement.

Archive role

A species that makes dryland shrub structure visible.

Archive meaning.

This bird is a perfect Persian Wilds species because it defeats the idea that desert means absence. Small differences in shrub cover, soil and food can define an entire life.

Field note

Despite being a corvid relative, it spends a striking amount of time on the ground and is famous for running quickly through desert scrub.
