Open country logic.

The onager belongs to wide sightlines: gravel plains, semi-desert, steppe and sparse forage. Its body answers a landscape with little cover. The solution is not concealment but endurance, speed and the ability to move between distant resources.

In the archive, the onager is a key species for understanding interior Iran. It turns the map into questions of corridor, fence, grazing pressure, drought and protected area design.

Habitat

Arid steppe, desert plain and open protected landscapes.

Ecological role

Large grazer and seed mover in sparse vegetation systems.

Why it matters.

Species like the Persian onager make scarcity visible. A plain may look empty from a road, yet hold the routes, grasses, salt-tolerant plants and seasonal water points that allow an entire large-mammal life to persist.

The profile will later add detailed range notes, historic decline, reintroduction context and field-map layers.
